Editorial: Is Biden competent to carry the nuclear football?

According to Fox News and Military.com, on Feb. 25, 2021, more than 30 Democrat Congressional House members are suggesting President Biden’s authority over the nation’s nuclear missile launch codes be removed and placed into committee-like jurisdiction.

Their reasoning – “Vesting one person with this much authority entails real risks.  Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that causes other officials to express concerns about the president’s judgment,” says Reps. Jimmy Panetta (CA-D) and Ted Lieu (CA-D).

Is this a good idea, or indicative of something suspiciously flawed in Joe’s ability to comprehend imminent danger from antagonistic bluster?  Or, maybe they suspect his current mental acuity isn’t sufficient to entrust such an important responsibility

A president has few options and little time to decide what to do if he perceives a viable threat to the security of the country.  Once the missiles leave the launch platforms, submarine tubes, or aircraft bomb bays, it’s too late for him to rethink his options.  The weapons, unless intercepted or incapacitated, will impact the intended targets, whether the president has suddenly changed his mind or not.

Of course, being good Democrats, their concerns of an “unstable president” are directed more to former President Trump, even though he’s no longer in office.

“The worry is not about Biden, but more about Trump or another future Trump-like president” insists Stephen Young of the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Coincidentally, or not, House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi (CA-D), recently commented on the importance of enacting provisions of the 25th Amendment should a president be determined to be incapable of performing his duties.  She insisted her comments were not directed toward Trump.

If not Trump, only Biden is left, since he’s the current president with nuclear launch authority.  If Biden is removed because of physical or mental issues, Vice President Kamala Harris would be next in line of command.  Before being elected VP, she was one of the more liberal members of the Senate.

What is almost impossible to fathom in this scenario is there would only be few precious minutes to recognize and respond to an incoming missile strike before the opportunity to adequately retaliate has passed.  To have our leaders conduct a committee meeting, and then agree or disagree on defensive measures, may take several weeks or months — if they ever reach a decision.

In less than two months in office, Joe Biden is already seeing dissent within his own party; relied upon the issuance of a plethora of Executive Orders to reverse many of President Trump’s previous accomplishments; halted construction of the southern border wall; stopped further development of the Keystone Pipeline, resulting in thousands of lost jobs; and witnessed Congressional passage of a pork-laden $1.9 trillion COVID-19 “rescue plan”, of which less than 10% is actually COVID related.  The rest is pure lard going to Democratic pet projects.

In the meantime, tens of thousands of Central and South American immigrants – and who knows who else – are traveling toward the US/Mexico border.  With few restraints in place, the migration more closely resembles an invasion.  Congress has been warned to “prepare for border surges.”

No need for an army of guns, tanks, and aircraft when hordes of humanity can simply walk across virtually unimpeded bringing drugs, disease, and civil unrest into our country?

Joe hasn’t held a single press conference explaining how he intends to deal with the impending border crisis, other than advocating more beds for parentless undocumented children.  No clue had to restore order as a result of his own failed proclamations.

Yet, politicians and bureaucrats in Washington overseeing all this craziness made sure they erected a wall around The Capitol, guarded by several thousand-armed National Guard troops.  In The Swamp’s thinking, walls are not a solution for the nation’s border safety but are perfectly permissible to protect their self-serving interests.

Just another blatant example of “Laws for thee, but not for me” mentality of many of these Washington charlatans.

Ironically, under the threat of forced tax compliance, we’re the ones paying for all this foolishness!
