GILA COUNTY – A fire that began Sunday evening at the Russell Gulch Landfill in Globe has been contained, but crews remain on the scene to monitor hotspots.

The landfill was closed on Monday, April 22, and is only open for green waste and metals on Tuesday, April 23. All loads will be inspected. The landfill will fully reopen Wednesday allowing two vehicles at a time for trash debris.

The Tri-City Fire Department received a call Sunday, April 21, reporting that the Russell Gulch Landfill was on fire.

After gaining access to the landfill at 5:45 p.m., the Gila County Sheriff’s Office determined the fire was contained to Cell 3A and that no structures nor vegetation were in jeopardy.

Gila County staff arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, and staff from General Services, Consolidated Roads, and Landfill Division performed fire suppression.

Tri-City remained on site as an emergency standby until the fire was contained at about 8:45 p.m. and remained on standby.

Gila County staff members worked to extinguish one area that continued to flame after being extinguished.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Gila County Public Works reminds residents and commercial haulers that tires, electronics, batteries, liquids, chemicals, and paints are not permitted in the landfill. The landfill will accept tires, batteries, and electronics in a designated area.
