Roughriders, Vandals tip off for tourney title

THATCHER – The final round pairings of the 47th Eastern Arizona Holiday Tourney are on Friday, Dec. 29. It will be Miami (9-2) versus Pima (9-2) for the championship at 6 p.m.

The Thatcher senior returned from a leg injury to notch a team-high 12 points while Hoopes had four. Pima advanced via a 42-20 win and Thatcher meets Saint David for third place at 11:30 a.m.

Pima (72-57) has participated in 43 previous tourneys and Miami (5-13) in six, and both are 2-0 in this tourney. The Roughriders have five titles to their credit, including from the two most recent meets, and the Vandals are in their initial finale.

Morenci (5-7 overall) meets Valley Union (7-10) for seventh place at 8:30 a.m., Thatcher (3-8) meets Saint David (13-1) for third place at 11:30 a.m., and Safford (3-10) meets Fort Thomas (10-6) for fifth place at 3 p.m. All games will be played in Guitteau Gymnasium.

Round two results on Dec. 28 were Safford over Morenci 45-38, Fort Thomas over Valley Union 74-15, Miami over Saint David 62-36, and Pima over Thatcher 42-20.

The Apaches prevailed 74-15 and meet Safford for fifth place at 3 p.m. The other gFort Thomas defenders are freshman Jamie Johnson (3) and sophomoresuu Tawnee Jones (34), Kirah Moses (44), and Makayla Chapman (25). The other Blue Devils are junior Lexi Boss (10) and senior Breiah Garcia (1). Cody tallied 11 points, Boss and Jones six each, and Chapman, Johnson, and Moses four apiece. Garcia and Sosa did not score.

The Dec. 27 opening round results were Thatcher over Fort Thomas 42-36, Saint David over Morenci 35-33, Miami over Safford 51-42, and Pima over Valley Union 65-13.
