GRAHAM COUNTY – A man attempting to make his travel trailer more accommodating accidentally burned it to the ground Wednesday afternoon while utilizing a camp-style portable propane heater.

According to Safford Fire Chief Clark Bingham, the trailer’s owner had placed the heater in the structure to warm it up and then left it unattended.

“There was no power to the RV,” Bingham said. “It was just that propane heater that he had put in.”

Safford Fire was dispatched to an address off W. Ocotillo Street at about 4:12 p.m. regarding a 12- to 15-foot travel trailer fully engulfed in fire. The department sent two engines and a water tender and kept the fire to the single structure, which was a total loss. However, there were no reported injuries.

Firefighters mopped up the scene with about 1,200 gallons of water and were back at the station in about an hour and a half, according to Bingham.
