SAFFORD – While cases have slowed down and roughly 25 percent of Graham County residents have been vaccinated, Safford continues to see some fatalities attributed to COVID-19.

On Tuesday, the Graham County Department of Health and Human Services reported the county’s 80th death attributed to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic locally in March 2020. The victim was a Safford resident in the 55-64 age group.

As of Tuesday, the health department lists a total of 5,569 cases have been confirmed, with 5,379 of those listed as recovered, 110 active, and 80 deaths.

According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, roughly 43 percent of Arizonans have been vaccinated, with Greenlee County right with the state at 43.5 percent of its residents vaccinated. Health experts have advised that roughly double that amount will be necessary to gain herd immunity to the virus.

The vaccine is available in Graham and Greenlee counties free to anyone who would like to receive it.
