Copper Hill Cross Country meet at golf course Wednesday

GREENLEE COUNTY – The Sixth Copper Hills Cross Country Invitational meet will be held at the Greenlee County golf course on Wednesday, Oct. 27. There are six teams scheduled to join the Wildcats; Benson, Miami, Safford, San Carlos, Thatcher, and Tombstone.

The purpose of the sport is to get from point “A” to point “B” in the fastest time possible. In this particular case, it is a 5K run following the perimeter of the county golf course.

Five of Morenci’s six boys and three of its six girls turned in personal best times during the Marana-held Eye of the Tiger Invitational meet on Oct. 23.

Sophomore Keaton Jasso (18:41.30), freshman Anthony Heathman (19:43.60), junior Brady Hooper (23:24.90), and freshmen Tristan Burke (27:44.90) and Camren Colvin (30:53.70) each set personal best times in Marana.

Junior Emery McCabe’s personal best (24:20.00) was set in Casa Grande on Sept. 24.

For the girls, sophomores Valeria Zegarra Nunez (21:00.30) and Elyse Gonzales (23:53.90) plus junior Chastity Gardner (34:48.00) reset personal best times in Marana.

Personal bests for sophomore Yareczi Minor (28:55.70) and freshman Roselyn Dorrell (30:29.60) were set in Tucson Oct. 16, and personal nest for junior Marissa Jacinto was set during 2020 (26:35.00).

Jasso ended 52nd of 122 in 18 minutes, 41.30 seconds and during the Eye of the Tiger Invitational Varsity Blue run, 14th of 40 (20:26.40) during the Thatcher Invitational Varsity run on Oct. 20, 62nd of 162 (18:49.30) during the John Gleason Invitational Varsity run in Tucson on Oct. 16, 11th of 51 (19:44.37) during the Benson Invitational Varsity run on Oct. 6.

Heathman finished 77th (19:43.60) in Marana, 12th (20:05.79) in Thatcher, 102nd (19:48.70) in Tucson, 19th of 30 (20:54.81) during the Safford Invitational Varsity run on Oct. 13, 19th (20:27.17) in Benson, 13th of 40 (20:22.00) during the Nike Southwest Invitational Small Schools Freshmen run in Casa Grande on Sept. 24, and 18th of 51 (23:13.00) during the Willcox Invitational Varsity run on Sept. 15.

Heathman was 15th of 42 (20:06.24), McCabe 33rd (23:18.30), and Hooper 35th of 42 (25:29.14) during the Justin Prevette Invitational Varsity run in Tombstone on Sept. 8.

During open runs, Hooper was 140th of 233 (23:24.90), junior Emory McCabe 175th (24:29.60), Burke 217th (27:44.90) and Colvin 229th (30:53.70) in Marana; Hooper, McCabe, Burke, and Colvin were 27th (23:24.21), 32nd (25:55.11), 46th (33:32.95), and 47th (33:33.00), respectively, of 47 in Thatcher; Hooper was 102nd (23:58.10) and Burke 138th (32:40.30) of 142 during in Tucson; Hooper was 19th (24:55.55) of 29, Burke 25th (28:33.52), and Colvin 28th (32:29.82) in Safford; Hooper was 19th of 33 (24:38.85) and McCabe 21st (24:51.60) in Benson; Hooper was 152nd of 285 (23:33.00) and McCabe 178th (24:20.00) during the Small Schools Open in Casa Grande; Hooper was 32nd of 41 (30:29.21), McCabe 27th (27:59.18), Colvin 39th (39:04.05), and Burke 40th (39:53.43) in Willcox; and freshman Jacob Verdugo ended 31st of 37 (28:35.13) in Tombstone.

Nunez ended 10th of 96 in 21 minutes, 00.30 seconds during the Eye of the Tiger Invitational Varsity Blue run, 4th of 45 (22:14.14) during the Thatcher Invitational Varsity run on Oct. 20, 22nd of 127 (21:36.30) during the John Gleason Invitational Varsity run in Tucson on Oct. 16, 3rd of 36 (22:19.63) during the Benson Invitational Varsity run on Oct. 6, 4th of 34 (22:06.52) during the Safford Invitational on Oct. 13, 3rd of 36 (22:19.63) during the Benson Invitational on Oct. 6, 3rd of 24 (25:26.82) during the Willcox Invitational on Sept. 15, and 5th of 24 (22:25.93) during the Justin Prevette Invitational in Tombstone on Sept. 8.

Gonzales finished 53rd (23:53.90) in Marana, 18th (26:36.09) in Thatcher, 17th (26:15.81) in Benson, 59th of 333 (21:46.00) during the Nike Southwest Invitational Small Schools Varsity run in Casa Grande on Sept. 24, 12th (28:41.32) in Willcox, and 14th (24:20.03) in Tombstone.

Jacinto was 23rd (29:19.69) in Thatcher, 20th (27:57.68) in Safford, 23rd (29:48.21) in Benson, 19th (33:36.59) in Willcox, and 19th (27:27.32) in Tombstone.

During open runs, Minor was 102nd of 133 (31:25.90) in Marana, 77th of 115 (28:55.70) in Tucson, 13th of 33 (29:50.36) in Safford, 23rd of 24 (37:09.32) in Benson, 17th of 35 (34:11.47) in Willcox, and 16th of 32 (29:11.51) in Tombstone.

Gardner was 123rd (34:48.00) in Marana, 34th of 36 (45:28.38) in Thatcher, 35th (48:20.96) in Willcox, and 32nd (44:02.68) in Tombstone.

Dorrell was 91st (30:29.60) in Tucson, 26th (34:30.19) in Thatcher, 17th (33:37.00) in Benson, 30th (41:13.89) in Willcox, and 32nd (36:59.07) in Tombstone.
