SAFFORD – Those wishing to do transactions with Chase Bank at 321 W. Main St. in Safford were turned away, starting Monday afternoon, when it temporarily closed for business.

On Tuesday, the building was locked and a sign was in the window indicating the closure. The sign advised to use Chase’s mobile app, go online at chase.com or call 1-800-935-9935 to schedule a phone meeting for banker services.

However, Chase’s corporate headquarters was unaware of the branch’s closure and believed it to still be operating normally.

Calls to the Safford location went to a recorded voicemail system.

A corporate employee advised that the location showed open on her branch locator, however, that was not the case when one physically went to the location.

“If you hadn’t told me that something was going on, I couldn’t tell anything from this,” the corporate employee said. “I don’t know what to say about that. I’m going to certainly report it, but there’s nothing here to indicate to me one way or another.”

A corporate Chase supervisor named Agnes advised that the corporate office couldn’t tell why it was closed or when it would reopen.

“We can send out feedback and our upper management will check on that,” she said. “In this scenario, sir, right now we don’t have pertinent information about it.”
