Wildkats fall to Apaches at home

DUNCAN – The Duncan Wildkats succumbed 50-20 to the Fort Thomas Apaches in a region pairing Jan. 8.

The Wildkats trailed by six points (2-8) after the opening period, by 14 (8-22) at halftime, and by 22 (16-38) heading into the final period.

Duncan totaled nine field goals plus 2-6 free throws versus 22 field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 5-10 free throws by Fort Thomas.

Five Wildkats scored, but none in double figures. Delanie Claridge had six points, Eddy five, McGrath four, Melissa Claridge three, and Damron two.

The Apaches had two double-digit scoring juniors. Angel Wright netted a game-high 16 points on six field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 3-4 free throws and Leyla Nelson 10 on five field goals plus 0-2 free throws. Junior Cheyenne Hinton added eight points, seniors Leyla Dona and Normisha Moses plus junior Shylenna Duane four apiece, and junior Jordan Juan and sophomore Kyia Haws two each.

The Wildkats fell by single digits in their previous home game, but that was more than two weeks ago and a game was not played since.

Through 13 games, Duncan has averaged a 23-46 (301-595) score per game or a deficit of 23 points and has a combined free throw shooting percentage of 42 (79-190) compared to 49 (101-208) for their opponents.

Individually, junior Kaktys Garcia has a percentage of 100 (2-2), senior Payton Damron 60 (28-47), senior Katelyn Stergion 57 (4-7), senior Melissa Claridge 50 (25-50), sophomore Janye Eddy 35 (7-20), sophomore Loren Basteen 33 (2-6), senior Delanie Claridge 25 (3-12), freshman Kiley McGrath 18 (6-33), freshman Kierra Lacey 18 (2-11), junior Morgan Billingsley 0-2.

Senior Britni Avant, sophomore Angel Benavidez, and freshman Oniah Jensen have not attempted any free throws.

The No. 29 Wildkats (1-13 overall, 1-9 seeding, minus 8.1403 rating, 0-2 1A East Region) visit the No. 19 Gilbert Arete Prep Chargers (5-8, 4-6, minus 3.0181, 1-0) on Friday, Jan. 11 before hosting the No. 23 Winkelman Hayden Lobos (5-9, 4-6, minus 3.8666, 1-2) on Tuesday, Jan. 15 and the No. 34 Phoenix NFL Yet Eagles (0-5, 0-5, minus 13.1832, 0-1) on Wednesday, Jan. 15, all for region contests.

Fort Thomas (11-6, 8-2, 7.3774, 2-0 East Region) ranked No. 5, travels to No. 11 Cibecue (11-5-1, 7-1, 3.8036, 2-0 East Region) on Friday and Saint Michael (11-6, 10-2, 1.4599, 8-1 North Region) on Saturday, before welcoming No. 6 Kearny Ray (12-5, 7-2, 7.0957, 1-0 East Region) on Tuesday.
