Flood Gates to Close
By Jon Johnson
CLIFTON — The Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office has issued a voluntary evacuation order for Clifton as floodwaters along the San Francisco River continue to rise rapidly.
Authorities are warning residents to prepare for severe flooding early Monday morning as water levels threaten to breach key infrastructure across the community.
“We are evacuating Clifton, so if you are in Clifton right now, get a bag, get your belongings packed, and please exit Clifton,” said Greenlee County Sheriff Eric Ellison in a public address. “We expect the water to come over the bridge at about 3 a.m.”
According to emergency officials, the San Francisco River is projected to crest above 23 feet. In response to the incoming high water, crews have already closed the smaller floodgates protecting the town. If river levels reach the expected thresholds, officials will close the town’s massive main floodgates, colloquially known by locals as the “Jurassic Park” gates, effectively sealing off access routes through the lower flood zone.
In addition to displaced residents, many workers at Freeport-McMoRan Morenci Operations may be stuck because of the gate closures.
Shelter Information
An emergency shelter has been established for displaced residents seeking refuge overnight.
“If you’re being evacuated and you need shelter, you can go to the Duncan Fairgrounds, and shelter will be provided for you,” Sheriff Ellison noted. “So if you need a place to go, head down to Duncan. Go to the county fairgrounds, and you’ll be taken care of there. Have a safe night. Be careful.”
Shelter Location:
- Duncan Fairgrounds (Greenlee County Fairgrounds)
- Open to all Clifton evacuees requiring temporary housing and assistance.
Residents remaining in low-lying areas along the river corridor are urged to monitor emergency updates closely, gather essential medications and documents, and evacuate before floodwaters cross key road access points. Emergency personnel will remain on scene monitoring river levels throughout the night.
