Regional tourney looms ahead for Duncan girls

SAN SIMON – The Duncan Wildkats complete their regular season schedule in San Simon, meeting the No. 29 Longhorns as No. 9 on Monday, Jan. 29. Duncan is 3-1 in region games played and San Simon 0-4. Duncan has a 54-10 non-region win over San Simon on Dec. 5.

The other region pairing this week (Jan. 29-Feb. 3) has No. 1 Saint David (4-0) at No. 10 Elfrida Valley Union (3-1) on Jan. 29.

A regional tourney pairing the teams from the Tucson Northwest and Tucson Southeast Regions will be held on Thursday and Saturday, Feb. 1 and Feb. 3 in Saint David.

No. 29 San Simon Longhorns (4-12 overall)

The Chris Lentz-coached San Simon Longhorns (4-12 overall, 3-9 seeding, 0-4 Tucson Southeast Region for sixth of six) are averaging a 24-38 (386-609) score per game or a 14-point deficit.

San Simon has seeding wins over Phoenix Day School for the Deaf (39-6, Nov. 17), Tucson Arizona School for the Deaf and the Blind (29-12, Nov. 29), and Tucson’s The Gregory School (54-51, Dec. 6). The losses are to Duncan (10-53, Dec. 5), Patagonia (0-1, Dec. 19), Baboquivari (24-54, Jan. 9), Saint David (16-59, Jan. 12), The Gregory School (21-32, Jan. 13), San Manuel (32-44, Jan. 18), Valley Union (22-53, Jan. 19), Patagonia (19-39, Jan. 22), and Valley Union (16-36, Jan. 24).

In addition, the Longhorns went 1-3 during a 2-day tourney attended on Dec. 15-16. The win was over Winkelman Hayden (28-26, Dec. 15) while losses were to San Manuel (28-42, Dec. 15), Mesa Lincoln Prep (24-56, Dec. 16), and Heber Mogollon (18-45, Dec. 16).

A seven-member roster includes juniors Kaylee Armstrong (31), Betsabe Castellanos (11), and Hollie Keil (5); sophomores Evelyn Lopez (2) and Kimber Rudiger (20); and freshmen Alyzon Corrales (4) and Anastasia Fierro (15).

No. 9 Duncan Wildkats (14-9)

The Eldon Merrell-coached Duncan Wildkats (14-9 overall, 13-6 seeding, 3-1 Tucson Southeast Region) are averaging a 33-26 (767-539) score per game or a 7-point margin.

Duncan has seeding wins over San Simon (53-10, Dec. 5), Tucson Desert Christian (39-19, Dec. 8), San Manuel (42-21, Dec. 12), Kearny Ray (44-13, Dec. 15), Willcox (39-24, Dec. 18), Arizona School for the Deaf and the Blind (35-24, Dec. 19), Winkelman Hayden (20-19, Jan. 3), Ray (34-12, Jan. 13), Baboquivari (43-23, Jan. 16), Patagonia (21-17, Jan. 18), Valley Union (31-23, Jan. 22), San Manuel (29-20, Jan. 24), and Superior (36-20, Jan. 26). The losses are to Tombstone (30-42, Nov. 17), Baboquivari (40-43, Nov. 29), Fort Thomas (24-55, Dec. 14), Saint David (29-47, Jan. 8), Valley Union (23-32, Jan. 10), and Tombstone (23-32, Jan. 20).

Additionally, the Wildkats went 3-1 during the three-day Amphitheater tourney on Nov. 20-22. The wins wereover Tucson Saint Augustine Catholic (34-29, Nov. 20), The Gregory School (40-8, Nov. 21), and Hayden(39-15, Nov. 22) while the loss was to Joseph City (19-45, Nov. 21).

Duncan’s roster includes seniors Aubrey Evans (10) and Rachel Sumner (5), juniors Emily Kempton (14) and Camille Miller (11), sophomore Brendy Paz (4), and freshmen Emily Evans (24), Lily Ford (20), Sofia Harris (15), McKenzie Jones (30), Heidi Miller (22), and Paisley Patton (23).

1Tucson Southeast Region Standings

The 1A Tucson Southeast Region standings following 13 games through Jan. 26, are Saint David (14-1 seeding, 4-0 region) first, Duncan (13-6, 3-1) second, Valley Union (10-5, 3-1) third, Patagonia (11-6, 2-3)fourth, Sella Baboquivari (9-8, 1-4) fifth, and San Simon (3-9, 0-4) sixth.

Saint David (4-0) has region wins over Patagonia (69-14, Jan. 4), Duncan (47-29, Jan. 6), San Simon (59-16, Jan. 12), and Baboquivari (55-24, Jan. 15). The No. 1 Tigers are averaging a 58-21 (230-83) score per region game or a 37-point margin.

Duncan (3-1) has region wins over Baboquivari (43-23, Jan. 16), Patagonia (21-17, Jan. 18), and Valley Union (31-23, Jan. 22). The No. 9 Wildkats are averaging a 31-28 (124-110) score per region game or a 3-point margin.

Valley Union (3-1) has region wins over Baboquivari (51-34, Dec. 20), Patagonia (48-38, Jan. 16), and San Simon (53-22, Jan. 19). The No. 10 Blue Devils are averaging a 44-31 (175-125) score per region game or a 12-point margin.

Patagonia (2-3) has region wins over Baboquivari (43-41, Jan. 12) and San Simon (39-19, Jan. 22). The No. 13 Lobos are averaging a 30-33 (148-166) score per region game or a 3-point deficit.

Baboquivari (1-4) has a region win over San Simon (54-24, Jan. 9). The No. 12 Warriors are averaging a 35-43 (176-216) score per region game or an 8-point deficit.

The No. 29 San Simon Longhorns (0-4) are averaging a 20-51 (81-205) score per region game or a 31-point deficit.

The 1A state rankings as of noon on Jan. 26 listed Saint David as No. 1 (14-1 seeding, 15.7096 rating), Joseph City No. 2 (16-1, 14.0928), Mesa Lincoln Prep No. 3 (13-3, 6.5855), Saint Michael No. 4 (13-4, 6.1523), Fort Thomas No. 5 (11-6, 6.1335), Heber Mogollon No. 6 (10-3, 5.4639), Tucson Desert Christian No. 7 (11-4, 3.3484), Salome No. 8 (9-2, 3.3460), Duncan No. 9 (12-6, 2.8200), and Elfrida Valley Union No. 10 (8-5, 1.7733).

The visiting Panthers reached double figures on a fourth quarter free throw, their final point scored in the game. Duncan led 11-2 following the first quarter, 17-2 at halftime, and 26-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

Duncan totaled 17 field goals plus 2-6 free throws versus four field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 1-2 free throws by Superior. 

Kempton (14) had a game-high nine points, Patton (23) added eight, Sumner (5) six, Harris (15) four, Aubrey Evans (10) three, and Camille Miller (11), Ford (20), and Heidi Miller (22) two apiece.

For Superior, Yaritzel Romero (5) had five points, Lillianna Fritz (11) three, and Susan Macinas (2) two.

San Manuel outscored Duncan 11-4 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to offset the 16-point three-quarters deficit. The Wildkats led 8-2 after the first quarter, 15-2 at halftime, and 25-9 heading into the fourth quarter.

Duncan totaled 10 field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 7-14 free throws compared to seven field goals (three 3-pointers) plus 3-6 free throws by San Manuel.

Kempton (14) and Camille Miller (11) had eight points apiece, Sumner (5) and Aubrey Evans (10) four each, Ford (20) and Heidi Miller (22) both two, and Paz (4) one.

For San Manuel, junior Gyannah Madrid (32) and sophomore Cienna Maghinay (35) six points apiece, junior Laila Ruiz (24) four, and both senior Jasmine Sanchez (10) and sophomore Juli Rodriguez (1) two each.

The Wildkats led 8-4 after the opening quarter, 13-10 at halftime, and 24-16 heading into the fourth quarter. A 7-7 fourth quarter outing by both teams left the margin at eight points.

For the game, Duncan netted 10 field goals (three 3-pointers) plus 8-19 free throws compared to 10 field goals plus 3-7 free throws by Valley Union.

Kempton (14) had a team and game-high 11 points on two field goals (one 3-pointer) plus 6-10 free throwsand Camille Miller (11) 10 on three field goals (two 3-pointers) plus 2-4 free throws. Sumner (5) added six points and Aubrey Evans (10) four.

For Valley Union, junior Lexi Boss (10) had nine points, freshman Kylee Gilbreth (22) seven, senior Breiah Two Moons (1) four, junior Sid Curiel (15) three.
