GLENDALE — Braden Huish and Isaac Palmer delivered a dominant season for Thatcher High School tennis, culminating in a state championship on Monday night at the Glendale Tennis Center. The junior-senior pair won the Arizona Division III Boys Doubles title with a straight-sets victory.

Huish and Palmer defeated opponents senior Ryan Nicholl and sophomore Drake Mills from ALA-West Foothills in the final 6-3, 6-3. Playing with strong communication, aggressive net play, and steady baseline work, the Eagles rallied when needed and controlled the key moments under the lights to secure the win.

The path to the title showcased their consistency. As a top-ranked team, they cruised through the bracket, winning most matches in straight sets. They defeated Buckeye Odyssey Institute in the first round, Chandler Prep in the second round, St. David in the quarterfinals, and the Herndon brothers from Pusch Ridge in the semifinals. The pair dropped just one set throughout the entire state tournament.

Their regular season was equally impressive. Huish and Palmer compiled a strong record in dual matches, powering Thatcher to a 13-1 overall team mark and a perfect 7-0 section record. They delivered dominant victories against area teams, including Pima, Safford, Duncan, Benson, Morenci, and Willcox, often winning by shutout scores. Even in tighter contests against stronger programs, they showed resilience and the ability to adjust mid-match. Both players also contributed in singles, adding depth to the Eagles’ lineup.

Head coach Chris Cook and the Thatcher community have watched this duo develop strong chemistry. Their on-court teamwork, combined with leadership in the classroom and school activities, made them standouts beyond just results. The state title marks a historic achievement for the Thatcher tennis program and elevates the profile of small-school athletics in Graham County.

Huish and Palmer exemplified dedication, poise under pressure, and consistent excellence all season. Their run sets a new benchmark for future Eagles teams and gives Thatcher plenty to cheer about in the books.

The duo will now lead No. 3-ranked Thatcher into the quarterfinals of the team state competition on Wednesday with a home match against No. 6-ranked Florence. Play begins at 3 p.m.
