Attention Gila Monsters: Your help is needed this April! Your blood donation can help ensure doctors and hospitals have what they need on the shelves for patients in need. Every time you give, you may help save more than one life. Your donation at the Eastern Arizona College Blood Drive can make a real difference to someone in need.

The blood drive will take place Thursday, April 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at EAC’s Gherald L. Hoopes Jr. Activities Center at 615 N. Stadium Ave. in Thatcher. Click here to make an appointment.

Longtime Red Cross Phlebotomist Charlie Overhold has donated more than 17 gallons himself and credits it with keeping his blood fresh and young.

“The blood we take out of you has been in your body from three seconds to a couple of years…The pint of blood we take out of you is like a whole community of blood… You’re going to make brand new young blood, so you get younger every time you donate. In my 52 years in the workforce, I’ve given 17 gallons of blood, 136 donations,” Overhold previously stated in November 2021.

You may still donate after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination. Knowing the name of the manufacturer is critical in determining your blood donation eligibility.

The American Red Cross is testing all donations for COVID-19 antibodies for a limited time. Results may indicate an antibody response after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine or possible past exposure to this coronavirus – and may identify donations with antibody levels necessary to potentially help COVID-19 patients with a weakened immune system. Only those feeling healthy and well should be present to donate, and appointments are strongly encouraged. Test results will be available to donors via the American Red Cross Blood DonorApp or at RedCrossBlood.org within one to two weeks.

The Red Cross follows a high standard of safety and infection control. For the safety of our donors and staff, the Red Cross will require all those at blood drives and blood donation centers to wear face masks regardless of their vaccination status. Valve face masks are not permitted. Face shields can be worn in addition to face masks but not as a substitute.
