Safford Police pursuit ends with one in custody, two more sought

Jon Johnson File Photo/Gila Herald: The Safford Police Department has issued a news release regarding a pursuit from Safford into Thatcher on Thursday. One suspect was taken into custody while two more are in the wind.

SAFFORD – The Safford Police Department is reportedly searching for two suspects who fled from officers in a pursuit along U.S. Highway 70 on Thursday. 

According to a Safford Police Department news release, multiple agencies including officers from Safford, Thatcher, and Pima police departments, deputies with the Graham County Sheriff’s Office, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety assisted in attempting to locate the suspects. 

A Safford officer initially performed a traffic stop on a vehicle but before contacting the driver, the vehicle fled into Thatcher. 

A police pursuit was terminated in the interest of public safety, according to the release, however, officers received information that led to the arrest of one suspect in the Daley Estates area. The name of the suspect was not listed in the release. 

Two additional suspects are still believed to be at large. The suspects are believed to have been involved in illicit drug activity.  

Police are currently searching the surrounding area and continue to investigate.
