PIMA – Another 2A East Region opponent resulted in yet another blowout for the heavily favored statewide No. 1-ranked Pima Roughriders girls basketball team.
Pima (3-0 region, 6-0 conference, 17-1 overall) annihilated No. 23 Willcox (0-2 region, 3-3 conference, 7-10 overall) 93-16 on Wednesday. And that was with both teams agreeing to enter the running clock mercy rule in the third quarter instead of waiting for the fourth.

Defense was the catalyst for the Roughriders, who scored time and time again off turnovers in their full-court zone press. Willcox had trouble getting the ball over the half-court line, and when it did things didn’t go much better.
The Roughriders held the Cowgirls to single-digit scoring in each quarter with a palindrome 4 points in the first, 5 in the second, 5 in the third, and 4 points in the fourth.
Offensively, Aubrie Sherwood had a huge game with a team-high 29 points off mostly fast-break layups. However, Aubrie also went 4-4 from the charity stripe.
Ashlynn Chlarson also had a huge night and hit for 24 points by not only scoring in the paint but nailing two 3-pointers much to the joy of the crowd.
Other scorers for Pima included Ashlie Sherwood and Jayci McClain with 9 points each; Saydee Allred and Ella Wiltbank with 7 points each; and Samantha Pippo with 4 points.
Willcox was led by Mia Mongarro with 9 points; followed by Sadie Todd with 3; Alexa Cecena and Alyssa Rogers with 2 points each; and Kam Wyatt and Maycee Michaels with 1 point each.
Pima will next travel to No. 20 Tombstone on Friday, Jan. 21, starting at 5:30 p.m.
