PIMA – The volunteer Pima Fire Department diligently worked through the night to knock down a wildfire that burned along the Gila River near the Pima Bridge off Main Street on Wednesday night through Thursday morning.

The last fire truck returned to the station at about 8 a.m. after fighting the fire through the night.

The fire erupted just before 8 p.m., and the cause at this time is still unknown. It burned Salt Cedar and Cottonwood trees and other brush for roughly 25 acres before being fully contained Thursday morning, according to Pima Fire Chief Scott Howell.

“We’ve got a few little hot spots that we are watching, but for the most part, we’ve got it out,” Howell said. “It was quite the fire, but we were able to get it knocked down.”

The Pima Police Department and Graham County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control as Main Street was closed down at the bridge for a couple hours Wednesday night, from about 8 – 10 p.m.

“There’s still going to be a little bit of smoke that can be seen in the area for the next day or two, and we are still keeping an eye on it. We’re just cleaning up at the station and getting trucks back together to get ready for the next one. We’ll see how the day goes.
