MORENCI – The Casey Woodall-coached Morenci wrestlers host a multi-meet on Friday, Dec. 22. Originally intended as a four-way meet, one of the would-be participants canceled out a day earlier, so instead it is a three-team meet. The Division I Marana Tigers and the New Mexico District 5A – I Rio Rancho Cleveland Storm, both of which outnumber the Wildcats in enrollment, are scheduled to join the Wildcats. Weigh-ins are at 2 p.m., and matches begin an hour later.

Marana tied for sixth of 37 teams during 2023 and finished 13th of 33 a year earlier. Cleveland finished no lower than fifth during the previous 10 seasons, as “Land of Enchantment” state champions twice in 6A (2016, 2017), second twice (2019 in 6A, 2015 in 5A), third in 6A (2018), fourth thrice (2014, 2021, 2022), and fifth twice (2020, 2023).

The Wildcats are 20-1 overall in duals following four meets and several of them have distinguished themselves, their families, school, and community with their performances.

Placements and records aren’t a big deal to Coach Woodall as long as the Wildcats do their best and improve every time they set foot on the mat. It is all in preparation for the state qualifying meet in February.

Morenci has earned 10 team state titles, the three most recent, and has 72 individual champions during the program’s 50 years.

The 2023 season had the Wildcats earning their fifth title in 10 years under Woodall, the 10th in the most recent 24 seasons, and the second three-peat. The Wildcats were also the state champions in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2016, 2017, 2021, and 2022.

It was also the 11th year three or more individual Wildcats emerged as class champions, the fifth time for three (1999, 2001, 2006, 2016, 2023). Four individual titles were earned four times (2000, 2002, 2003, 2017) and five twice (2021, 2022).

In the same 10-year span, Morenci placed 64 percent (78-122) of its state meet entrants, with only six exiting after two bouts without contributing team points. The Wildcats have won 65 percent (351-536) of their individual bouts, with 55 percent (194-351) by pins; and earned two team titles without having an individual champion.

There have been 24 champions, 19 runners-up, 13 in third place, 12 in fourth place, five in fifth place, and five in sixth place. The entrants have been 23 as freshmen, with one ending a champion; 32 as sophomores, with eight champions; 33 as juniors, with seven champions; and 34 as seniors, with eight champions.
