Morenci tennis girls edged by Cowgirls in regular-season finale

MORENCI – The Brenda Street-coached Morenci tennis girls’ season finale with Willcox came down to the doubles pairing April 16. The teams were tied 4-4.

Morenci led 6-3, but a 5-0 run by the Cowgirls decided the outcome, 8-6 for the match and 5-4 for the duel.

The No. 26 Wildcats (4-10 seeding, minus 0.6220 rating, 2-10 section) went 32-52 in singles and 17-25 in doubles following 14 duels.

In singles, No. 1 junior Keanna Cortez 0-14, No. 2 sophomore Izobel Uranzorig 3-11, No. 3 junior Corrie White 5-9, No. 4 junior Monica Gonzalez 9-5, No. 5 sophomore Taylor Begay 7-7, No. 6 freshman Vivianna Mendez-Draper 3-2, and junior Madalyn Wright 5-4.

In doubles, Cortez – Uranzorig is 2-11, White – Gonzalez 6-6, Wright – Draper 3-1, White – Wright 2-0, Begay – Draper 2-3, Begay – Wright 1-1, Cortez – Gonzalez 0-1, Uranzorig – Begay 0-1, Uranzorig – Draper 0-1, White – Draper 1-0.

Willcox – 5, Morenci – 4

Morenci won four pairings, three singles and a doubles over the visitors.

The singles wins were by Gonzalez (6-2, 6-4 over freshman Jodi Denny), Begay (6-1, 7-5 over sophomore Sydney Hansen), and Mendez-Draper (6-1, 6-2 over freshman Kamrielle Wyatt). The doubles win was by White – Gonzalez (8-4 over Denny – Wyatt).

For Willcox, senior Allison Melton (6-1 twice over Cortez), senior Abby Bull (6-4 twice over Uranzorig), and senior Kayla Ellisor (6-1, 6-2 over White) won singles pairings.

In Doubles, it was Melton – Bull (8-2 over Cortez – Uranzorig) and Ellisor – Hansen (8-6 over Begay – Draper) with the wins.
