MORENCI – The Brenda Street-coached Morenci tennis boys defeated the visiting Willcox Cowboys 6-3 in the season and home opener March 1. The Wildcats went 4-2 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.
In singles, no. 2 junior Tanner Hudman slipped past senior Javier Garcia 11-9 while No. 4 senior Luis Tejada, No. 5 junior Ryan Williams, and No. 6 sophomore Shaun Espinosa defeated junior Edward Vega, sophomore Marcus Barba, and sophomore Nicolas Ortiz, 10-4, 10-2, and 10-1, respectively.
The no. 2 duo of Vigil and Tejada defeated Rodriguez and Vega 8-3 and the no. 3 duo of Espinosa and junior Seth Rodgers downed Barba and sophomore Bridger Sanborn 8-2.
Willcox prevailed in two singles pairings, no. 1 junior Chase Childers 10-5 over junior Matthew Garcia and no. 3 senior Oliver Rodriguez 10-8 over junior Andrew Vigil. The doubles win was in no. 1 Childers and Garcia 8-5 over Garcia and Hudman.
Cowgirls – 6, Wildcats – 3
Willcox slipped past the MHS girls 6-3. The Cowgirls defeated Morenci 6-3, winning four singles and two doubles pairings.
In singles, No. 1 junior Allison Melton and No. 2 junior Abby Bull prevailed by identical 10-6 scores, Melton over junior Arisela Morales and Bull over junior Reona Alvarez; no. 3 senior Isis Gijzenberg downed sophomore Keonna Cortez 10-2, and no. 4 junior Kayla Ellisor defeated sophomore Corrie White 10-8.
The no. 1 duo of Melton and Gijzenberg bested Morales and Alvarez 8-2 and the no. 2 duo of Bull and Ellisor defeated Cortez and White 8-4.
Morenci no. 5 sophomore Monica Gonzales topped sophomore Sydney Hansen 10-1 and no. 6 sophomore Madalyn Wright blanked sophomore Jada Reynolds 10-0. The no. 3 duo of Gonzales and freshman Izobel Urazernz defeated Hansen and Reynolds 8-2.
Morenci is at Thatcher Monday, March 5 and at Safford Tuesday, March 6, before hosting Tombstone Friday, March 9.
