SAFFORD – Thomas Lucero III was arrested for DUI in the early morning of May 19 after being located passed out behind the wheel at the Circle K at 1324 S. 1st Ave.

According to a Safford Police report, the clerk called officers to the scene at about 1:14 a.m. after noticing Lucero passed out in his truck for some time.

An officer located Lucero unconscious behind the wheel with the keys still in the ignition and the engine hot to the touch.

Upon waking Lucero, the officer could immediately see multiple signs of intoxication. After initially saying someone had driven him to the location, Lucero allegedly admitted drinking at a bar south of Safford and then driving to the Circle K.

After failing a field sobriety test, Lucero registered a .194 percent breath/alcohol concentration on a portable breath test. He was then arrested and transported to the Safford Police Department. There, he eventually agreed to have his blood drawn and was released to a family member afterward.

A DUI charge is pending lab test results of his blood and review by the Graham County Attorney’s Office.
