GRAHAM COUNTY – Two juvenile males ages 12 and 14 were referred to Juvenile Probation after being caught throwing rocks at the Graham County Adult Detention Facility on Saturday, March 23.

According to a Graham County Sheriff’s Office report, a deputy was dispatched to the jail at about 5:07 p.m. when a detention officer noticed what appeared to be two juvenile males throwing rocks at the jail. The juveniles were on a ridge to the north of the jail dubbed “Graver’s Ridge”, which is at a much higher elevation than the facility.

The deputy drove up the ridge and saw two juvenile males run from the scene and attempt to hide in the bushes. The deputy instructed the youths to stop and they complied and admitted to throwing the rocks. The juveniles said they were trying to hit the tops of Conex metal storage containers and showed that they were throwing golf-ball-sized rocks.

At that point, the deputy received a priority call and had to leave but told the boys to leave and not to throw rocks at the jail again.

After the priority call, the deputy was dispatched back to the jail where he was shown damage to a window on the north side of the jail near where inmates are first brought into the facility.

The window was severely cracked and a golf-ball-sized rock that matched the color of the residue left on the window was found on the ground nearby. A detention sergeant advised that it would cost more than $1,000 to replace the damaged window.

The following day, the deputy went to one of the boy’s residence and informed his mother of what had transpired. Upon hearing that her son would be referred to Juvenile Probation, the mother told the deputy that he was already on probation but she would tell her son about the new referral. The boy is one of the boys who were responsible for damaging multiple businesses, home, and vehicular windows with a BB-gun last August. The deputy attempted to speak to the 12-year-old’s parents as well but the youth advised that they had just left to go to Phoenix. The deputy informed the juvenile about the broken window and said he would be referred to Juvenile Probation. Both the youth and the deputy attempted to contact his parents by phone but were unsuccessful.
