Duncan tennis girls earn H.T. Clothier Tournament title

DUNCAN – Duncan slipped past Tombstone 15-11 to win the girls’ 2018 H.T. Clothier Invitational Tournament Saturday, March 3. Saint David had one point and a fourth team cancelled out Thursday.

Last season, Tombstone totaled 19 points, Duncan 17, Morenci 10, and Saint David eight.

The Wildkats defeated Saint David 9-09 and Tombstone 6-3, and Tombstone bested Saint David 8-1.

Individual singles winners were Duncan No. 2 sophomore Kaitlyn Lunt, No.3 senior Natalie Jensen, and No. 5 sophomore Lennie Nielson along with Tombstone No. 1 McKenna Sosa, No. 4 Heaven Murphy, and No. 6 Jasmine Skinner.

Duncan’s doubles teams; No. 1 junior Brooklyn Kempton and freshman Melissa Claridge, No. 2 Lunt and Nielson, and No. 3 Jensen and freshman Kinsley Rapier, each went 2-0.

Duncan – 9, Saint David – 0

The Wildkats won all head-to-head pairings to shutout the Tigers.
In singles, Kempton, Lunt, Nielson, and Rapier blanked Haley Wichman, Alana Betancourt, Carly Judd, and Lila Smith 8-0, respectively, Jensen defeated Claire Daley 8-2, and Claridge downed Madi Davis 8-1.

The Kempton – Claridge duo shutout Wichman – Davis 8-0, and both Lunt – Nielson and Jensen – Rapier posted identical 8-1 scores over Betancourt – Daley and Judd – Smith, respectively.

Duncan – 6, Tombstone – 3

The Wildkats swept the doubles pairings, Kempton – Claridge 6-1 over Sosa – Carrillo, Lunt – Nielson 8-6 over Murphy – Arista Bohnas, and Jensen – Rapier 7-1 in a tie-breaker over Helena Watson – Skinner.

In singles, it was Lunt 8-4 over Watson, Jensen 8-1 over Brinley Carrillo, and Nielson 8-3 over Bohnas.

For Tombstone, Sosa and Murphy each had 8-4 scores over Kempton and Claridge, respectively, and Skinner 8-2 over Rapier.

Tombstone – 8, Saint David – 1

Sosa defeated Wichman 8-5 and Carrillo downed Dailey 8-3. The rest of the pairing ended in 8-0 shutouts by the Yellow Jackets. It was Murphy over Davis, Bohnas over Judd, and Skinner over Smith in singles plus Sosa – Carrillo over Wichman – Davis, Murphy –

Bohnas over Betancourt – Daley, and Watson – Skinner over Judd – Smith.

The Tigers’ lone win was 8-6 by Betancourt over Watson.
