WASHINGTON D.C. – The demand for at-home COVID-19 tests continues to grow but test kits are in short supply. Fake and unauthorized at-home kits are popping up online as scammers take advantage of the spike in demand and cases.
Using fake products is not only a waste of money but could increase your risk of spreading COVID-19 and keep you from getting the right treatment. Protect yourself from bogus kits by taking simple steps.
- Before you buy a test, make sure it’s authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Check the list of FDA-approved antigen and molecular tests approved for home use.
- Do your research. Check out a seller before you buy a test kit, especially if you’re buying from a site you don’t know.
- If there is a fee, pay with a credit card. Contact your credit card company and dispute the charge for an order you never received or for a product that is not as advertised.
