PIMA — A local artisan is reeling in national recognition after being selected for a historic freshwater fishing project.

Brady Sparkes, a professional fish taxidermist based out of Pima, was chosen from an elite pool of taxidermists across the United States to craft a replica mount of the newly crowned Arizona state record largemouth bass.

The original beast—a jaw-dropping 16.57-pound monster—was caught at Roosevelt Lake by angler Steve Jenkins. Prioritizing the conservation of the species and the health of the fish, Jenkins quickly returned the giant bass to the water after weighing it on certified scales. Because the live fish was released back into the lake, Jenkins was left without a physical trophy to commemorate his catch of a lifetime.

A Community-Driven Effort

Seeing an opportunity to honor Jenkins’ historic catch and sportsmanlike release, the Arizona fishing community rallied together on Facebook. A crowdfunding campaign quickly raised the necessary funds to fully pay for a world-class replica mount.

Sparkes, whose highly detailed custom craftsmanship stood out nationally, was ultimately commissioned to recreate the gargantuan bass to its exact scale and coloration.

The completed masterpiece will be unveiled to the public before it is officially handed over to its rightful owner during a special presentation at Cabela’s, 9380 W. Glendale Ave., in Glendale, on Wednesday, June 24.
