SAFFORD – The City of Safford has issued a notice for the temporary closure of a section of its popular multi-use path, effective immediately, as part of ongoing enhancements to prepare the area for the upcoming Mayor Jason Kouts Park.
The closure, expected to last approximately three weeks, will impact pedestrian and cyclist access adjacent to 8th Avenue and Discovery Park Boulevard, near the Safford Cemetery.
City officials emphasized the importance of the work in a public announcement, urging residents to plan alternate routes and prioritize safety during the disruption. “We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to enhance the area in preparation for Mayor Kouts Park,” the notice stated. The affected section is described as being near the cemetery, blocking north-south access along the path.
This latest closure follows a series of infrastructure improvements in the vicinity, including a previous eight- to ten-week shutdown of a western segment of the multi-use path below the cemetery, which began on Sept. 4. That earlier work was tied to a city sewer extension project, with the impacted area designated to integrate into the new park development. Additionally, 8th Avenue itself underwent a nearly six-month closure from late February to mid-August for utility upgrades, reopening just last month to facilitate the next phase of park construction.
The Mayor Jason Kouts Park project represents a significant $5 to $7 million investment in community recreation on a 15-acre site at the intersection of 8th Avenue and Discovery Park Boulevard. Named in honor of the longtime mayor, the park is envisioned as a vibrant hub for families and residents of all ages. Preliminary plans outline five key amenities: a splash pad for water-based fun, pickleball courts, inclusive playground equipment designed for accessibility, pinch-less zip lines for adventurous play, and an amphitheater capable of seating up to 500 for events, performances, and gatherings.
While no firm construction timeline has been announced, city leaders have described the park as a crucial enhancement to Safford’s public spaces, fostering recreation and social engagement. The multi-use path, a staple for local joggers, bikers, and walkers, weaves through this developing area, making the closures a necessary but temporary inconvenience for enhanced long-term benefits.
Residents are encouraged to monitor city updates for detour information and reopening details.
