SAFFORD — The Safford Unified School District issued a statement Thursday following an incident at Safford High School where an individual allegedly impersonated a probation officer and was found carrying a concealed firearm on campus grounds.
According to district officials, the individual arrived at Safford High School for a previously scheduled meeting with the principal. Upon arrival, the individual followed established school security procedures and was admitted into the front office for the appointment.
During the meeting, additional information came to light, prompting school staff and the School Resource Officer (SRO) to intervene. Upon further investigation, the SRO determined that the individual was carrying a concealed weapon. The officer immediately escorted the individual out of the front office and off campus.
District officials confirmed that the individual was never permitted past the main office into student-occupied areas, nor did they gain access to confidential student information. Authorities noted that no threats were made against students or staff, and the situation remained calm throughout the encounter.
The matter has been turned over to the Safford Police Department for further investigation and legal action.
In their statement, district officials commended the prompt action taken by staff and law enforcement, emphasizing that established safety protocols performed as intended.
“The safety and well-being of our students remains our number one priority,” the district stated, adding that SUSD is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.
