GRAHAM COUNTY – A Graham County woman was transported to a Tucson hospital after suffering a severe head injury and facial fracture among other injuries after reportedly jumping from a moving truck after arguing with her boyfriend Sunday night.

Shelly LaDawn Byrd, 37, of Central, was last listed by authorities as being transferred to either St. Joseph’s or Banner-University Medical Center Tucson in critical condition.

Byrd’s boyfriend called 911 at about 11:55 p.m. and advised his girlfriend had jumped out of his white, 2002 Chevy Silverado while he was traveling at about 55 mph on Airport Road near Aviation Way. The man was hysterical, according to the report, and said the truck may have struck or run her over as well. He said after the incident occurred he stopped, drove back to Byrd, placed her back in the truck, and called 911.

Upon arrival, deputies found a bloodied Byrd was able to speak at the scene before initially being transported to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center. Bryd allegedly admitted to jumping from the truck and denied any physical altercation between her and her boyfriend.

The boyfriend said they had been arguing about Bryd’s narcotic drug use and both advised she had smoked either Oxycodone or morphine roughly an hour before leaping from the moving vehicle.

With the boyfriend’s version of events remaining consistent, his actions after the incident, and both parties denying any foul play with no physical evidence to the contrary, the deputy released the boyfriend at the scene.

The case remains open with a review by Sheriff’s Office investigators.
