Willcox, Pima shutout Morenci tennis boys

MORENCI – The Wildcats tennis boys succumbed 0-9 to both Willcox on March 30 and Pima on April 1.

This week, Morenci is at Saint David on Monday, April 5, and at Miami on Tuesday, April 6, and hosts Thatcher on Thursday, April 8.

The rest of the section pairings are, Willcox at Thatcher, Duncan at Pima, and Benson at Safford on Tuesday; Willcox at Duncan and Safford at Pima on Thursday; and Safford at Willcox on Friday, April 9.

Other non-section pairings include Thatcher at Chandler Prep on Wednesday, April 7; Benson at Saint David on Thursday; and Pima at Miami on Friday.

Midway through the season or through April 3, Division III – Section I member standings are Willcox first (3-0 section, 5-0 overall), Thatcher second (2-0, 4-1), Pima third (2-2, 3-3), Benson fourth (1-1, 2-3), Safford fifth (1-1, 2-3), Morenci sixth (0-2, 0-3), and Duncan seventh (0-3, 0-4).

Willcox Cowboys

Willcox is 26-4 in singles and 15-0 in doubles. Individually, senior Luke Kauffman is 3-1, freshman Jacob Kauffman 5-0, junior Hunter Childers 4-0, senior Marcus Barba 5-0, senior Carson Shannon 3-2, junior Ryan McClaine 5-0, and senior Conrad Jasso 1-1.

In doubles, the Kauffman – Kauffman duo is 4-0, Childers – Barba 4-0, Shannon – McClain 4-0, Jacob Kauffman – Jasso 1-0, Barba – Shannon 1-0, and McClain – Jasso 1-0.

Thatcher Eagles

Thatcher is 25-5 in singles and 13-2 in doubles. Individually, senior Michael Greer is 5-0, senior Carson Turley 4-1, senior Timmy Rubalcava 4-1, sophomore Austin Haynie 4-1, junior Derek Bierman 4-1, and junior Carson Beals 4-1.

In doubles, the Greer – Beals duo is 2-0, Turley – Beals 2-0, Greer – Bierman 3-0, Turley – Bierman 2-1, and Rubalcava – Haynie 4-1.

Pima Roughriders

Pima is 18-18 in singles and 8-10 in doubles. Individually, senior Keanu Hansen is 1-5, sophomore Leland Thompson 3-3, junior Owen Lunt 3-3, junior Calin Paull 3-3, senior Dallin Preston 2-1, sophomore Carter Bryce 3-3, and sophomore Tucker Wilkerson 3-0.

 In doubles, the Hansen – Thompson duo is 2-3, Hansen – Paull 0-1, Lunt – Preston 2-1, Lunt – Paull 1-1, Thompson – Lunt 0-1, Paull – Bryce 2-1, and Bryce – Wilkerson 1-2.

Benson Bobcats

Benson is 9-17 in singles and 6-7 in doubles. Individually, senior Liam Galloway-Sprietsma is 1-3, senior Camden Waite 2-3, sophomore Scott Lutz 2-3, sophomore Conner Curtis 2-2, freshman Aubry Harris 1-3, and senior Adam McBride 1-3.

In doubles, Sprietsma – Waite is 2-1, Waite – Lutz 0-1, Lutz – Curtis 2-1, Harris – Sprietsma 0-2, Harris – McBride 2-1, and McBride – Curtis 0-1.

Safford Bulldogs

Safford is 15-15 in singles and 6-9 in doubles. Individually, senior Grant Smith is 2-3, senior Emanuel Torres 3-2, sophomore Doyle Cluff 2-3, senior Jacob Curtis 1-0, senior Joseph Pace 1-3, freshman Kody Guylas 4-1, and freshman Thomas Biggs 3-2.

In doubles, the Smith – Torres duo is 2-3, Cluff – Pace 2-3, and Guylas – Biggs 2-3.

Morenci Wildcats

Morenci is 0-18 in singles and 0-9 in doubles. Individually, sophomore Jarel Diaz is 0-3, sophomore Quinton Wiltbank 0-3, senior Jayden Yazzie 0-3, sophomore Joshua Biggs 0-3, senior Alfredo Vigil 0-3, and freshman Ryan Biggs 0-3.

In doubles, the Diaz – Wiltbank duo is 0-3, Yazzie – Josh Biggs 0-3, and Ryan Biggs – Vigil 0-3.

Duncan Wildkats

Duncan is 2-22 in singles and 1-11 in doubles, including forfeits in eight singles and four doubles. Senior Nathan Kempton is 2-2, sophomore Logan Basteen 0-4, sophomore Bryant Rapier 0-4, and freshman Cutter Scarsella 0-4.

In doubles, the Kempton – Basteen duo is 1-3 and Rapier – Scarsella 0-4.

Week 1-3 Results

Willcox has defeated Benson 9-0 (March 16), Saint David 7-2 (March 23), Safford 8-1 (March 25), Pima 8-1 (March 26), and Morenci 9-0 (March 30).

Thatcher’s wins are each 9-0 over Safford (March 26), Pima (March 30), Miami (March 31), and Benson (April 1). The loss was 2-7 to Gilbert-North American Leadership (March 29).

Wins for Pima have been 8-1 over Tombstone (March 25), 9-0 over Morenci (April 1), and 7-2 over Duncan (April 2); for Benson, 6-3 over Safford (March 29) and 9-0 over Duncan (March 30); and for Safford, 9-0 over Morenci (March 23) and 8-1 over Duncan (April 1).

Non-section losses have been 1-8 for Pima to Saint David (March 22), 0-3 for Benson to Tucson Desert Christian (March 18), and 0-9 by Duncan to Saint David (March 26).

Pima – 9, Morenci – 0

In singles, Pima No. 1 Hansen, No. 2 Thompson, No. 3 Lunt, and No. 5 Preston defeated Diaz, Wiltbank, Yazzie, and Vigil, respectively, by identical 8-2 scores while No. 4 Paull and No. 6 Bryce shutout Josh Biggs and Ryan Biggs 8-0.

The No. 1 Hansen – Thompson duo defeated Diaz – Wiltbank 8-1, the No. 2 Lunt – Preston duo defeated Yazzie – Josh Biggs 8-2, and the No. 3 Paull – Bryce duo defeated Ryan Biggs – Vigil 8-3.

Willcox – 9, Morenci – 0

The first four singles players each posted 6-0 and 6-0 sets scores over the Wildcats, No. 1 Luke Kauffman, No. 2 Jacob Kauffman, No. 3 Childers, and No. 4 Barba over Diaz, Wiltbank, Yazzie, and Josh Biggs, respectively.  Shannon defeated Vigil 6-0 and 3-1 in the No. 5 slot and No. 6 McClaine went 6-1 twice over Ryan Biggs.

In doubles, Kauffman – Kauffman blanked Diaz – Wiltbank 8-0, and both Childers – Barba and Shannon – McClain posted 8-1 scores over Yazzie – Josh Biggs and Ryan Biggs – Vigil, respectively.
