SAFFORD — The Mt. Graham Safe House is inviting the community to step up — literally — in support of survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The organization’s annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event is scheduled for this Friday, April 17, from 5 to 6 p.m. on the front lawn of the Graham County Courthouse in Safford. Participants will don women’s heels and take a symbolic walk to raise awareness about the realities faced by many survivors and to demonstrate community solidarity against sexualized violence.

The event, part of the international Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® movement, encourages men in particular to experience a small taste of the discomfort and vulnerability often associated with gender-based expectations, while uniting people of all genders in a visible stand against sexual assault.

Heels will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, though attendees are welcome to bring their own pair. Organizers recommend a 3-inch heel or lower for beginners to make the experience more accessible.

Everyone who participates will be entered into a drawing to win a 28-inch Blackstone Grill, adding a bit of fun and incentive to the meaningful activity.

“We’re coming together to raise our voices, show support, and take a meaningful step toward change,” said organizers from the Mt. Graham Safe House. “We hope to see you there and appreciate your support in raising awareness.”
