Gila Herald Staff Reports

AVONDALE — Extreme summer heat is no match for the blistering bats and dominant pitching of the Mt. Graham Little League (MGLL) 8-10U All-Stars.

Fresh off capturing the District 8 Championship banner in late June with an 8-3 victory over Bisbee, the Gila Valley’s youngest softball stars have packed up their trademark fire and taken it straight to the state’s highest stage. Through two rounds of the Arizona State Little League Softball Tournament at Festival Fields in Avondale, Mt. Graham remains perfect, completely outclassing the competition in the winner’s bracket.

Game 1: Mt. Graham 18, Arcadia All-Stars 1 (July 6, 2026)

The state tournament opener kicked off on Monday evening under punishing elements, with temperatures reaching a scorching 111 degrees at game time. If the elements bothered the District 8 champions, it certainly didn’t show on the scoreboard.

Mt. Graham absolutely tore the cover off the ball, putting together an explosive offensive clinic to pile on 18 runs against the Arcadia All-Stars.

While the offense lit up the scoreboard, the defense delivered a masterclass. Backed by flawless fielding from her teammates, Mt. Graham’s starting pitcher was utterly untouchable. She racked up 10 strikeouts over the course of the night, systematically shutting down any hope of an Arcadia comeback and limiting them to a lone run in a statement-making opening blowout.

Game 2: Mt. Graham 12, Camp Verde 2 (July 7, 2026)

The local squad kept their foot firmly on the gas pedal moving into the second round on Tuesday evening. Facing off against the District 1 champions, Camp Verde Little League (CVLL), Mt. Graham proved that their opening-night power surge was no fluke.

The offense stayed red-hot, seamlessly manufacturing runs across the frames to build a comfortable, early cushion. Combining disciplined plate appearances with aggressive baserunning, the Mt. Graham girls cruised to a decisive 12-2 victory.

With the win, Mt. Graham firmly establishes itself as one of the teams to beat, remaining comfortably undefeated in the winner’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

The Stakes Tonight: Round 3

The journey continues tonight, Wednesday, July 8, as Mt. Graham takes on Queen Creek, which defeated Maricopa 8-0 and Bullhead City 13-1 to reach this point. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.

The stakes are rising quickly. A victory tonight punches Mt. Graham’s ticket to the Winner’s Bracket Semifinals/Finals scheduled for later this week. Conversely, a loss would drop them into the grueling elimination bracket, where they would have to fight for survival to return to the top.

Tournament Outlook

If Mt. Graham can maintain this high-octane momentum, they will look to navigate the critical survival rounds:

  • July 9–10 (Thursday/Friday): Elimination bracket matchups and the high-stakes Winner’s Bracket Final.
  • July 11–12 (Saturday/Sunday): State Championship rounds.

The Gila Valley community continues to rally behind these 8, 9, and 10-year-old athletes, whose unrelenting hustle, teamwork, and composure under pressure are proving that championship heart knows no age limit. Stay tuned to the Gila Herald for continued updates as Mt. Graham chases a state title!

Mt. Graham Little League Baseball

While the softball team continues to impress, the Mt. Graham Little League All-Stars Baseball team will attempt to follow in their footsteps, starting with a matchup against Prescott Little League on July 10 in Marana at Ora Mae Harn District Park, starting at 5 p.m. Mt. Graham previously defeated Douglas Little League 14–7 for the District 8 Championship.
