CLIFTON – A Freeport McMoRan Inc. train derailed near the Clifton Train Depot at about 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, causing the closure of U.S. Highway 191.

According to the Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office, traffic was rerouted through Shannon Hill and Copper Verde Road. A scheduled paving job had reduced traffic to one lane only on Copper Verde Road, but the crews stopped work to allow for two-lane travel during the highway closure. Commercial traffic had to park and await the highway reopening.

The cause of the derailment is not yet known, but the train wasn’t carrying any hazardous materials and there were no injuries, according to the Greenlee County Sheriff’s Office.
