PERIDOT – The fire that closed down the highway for a day and threatened numerous assets in the Peridot area has been stifled. There was no perimeter growth listed for the Toyo Fire overnight.
The initial start of the fire was roughly 5 miles south of San Carlos on the San Carlos Apache Reservation on Friday, May 10.
The highway was closed Saturday afternoon due to the fire danger but was reopened the following day at about noon.
Southwest Area Team 1 Incident Commander Carl Schwope was listed as being in charge of the fire, which had roughly 267 total personnel. As of Tuesday morning, the fire had burned about 1,778 acres and was listed at 38% containment.
The fire is burning brush and short grass and there is a danger of an increase due to weather conditions, including hot, dry weather with breezy easterly winds in the afternoon.
