SAFFORD – The Safford City-Graham County Library will launch its National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program exploring The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros with a bilingual storytime and community art night on Thursday, Sept. 16. The NEA Big Read – Graham County is presented in partnership with the Friends of the Safford Library, the Gila Valley Arts Council, and The Graham County Chamber of Commerce, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Graham County is one of 61 communities nationwide participating in the 2021-2022 NEA Big Read. From September – December 2021 our community will celebrate The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros with a full calendar of events including an art competition, green corn tamale class, books discussions, and displays.
The kick-off event will feature two events on Sept. 16. A bilingual storytime will be held at 10 a.m. for children newborn – 5 and their grownups. A community art night will be held from 5 – 6:30 p.m. and will feature the work of local Hispanic artists as well as hands-on art projects and demos. Free copies of The House on Mango Street will be available at both events.
An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.
“The Big Read provides the perfect opportunity for communities to become part of one big book club. Anytime we model our love for reading, we are helping children to make positive connections and to become enthusiastic readers themselves, ” said Graham County School Superintendent Donna McGaughey.
