The health benefits of good bugs

Rolling around in the mud and getting giddy in a hot mineral spring could be an important part of your health regimen.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, lengthy visits at spas were the remedy for everything from palsy to gout. By day, you’d lounge about, “taking in the waters.” At night, you might gamble or dance. Today, the science is again saying that might be just what the doctor ordered, and fortunately, the RX is right in our back yards.

Natural hot mineral springs, particularly those with alkaline water like our local springs have, de-stress you. They are also cited as remedies for helping everything from high blood pressure and eczema, to digestion and circulation. And there is growing evidence of the health benefits of good bugs for your immune system as well.

Good Bugs. How Getting Dirty is Beneficial For Your Health.

In an over-sanitized world, with aggressive, antibiotic-resistant bacteria running loose, digestive flora and helpful bacteria are being used more and more as cures. Yogurt and probiotic flora are widely known for benefiting the digestive tract. When antibiotics have killed off too many good bacteria in the digestive tract and C Diff shows up, doctors are actually using fecal transplantation to reintroduce good bugs into the colon and intestines. Recent studies also show that “good” skin bacteria is an effective defense against MRSA.

Dr. Andrew Weil has a few safety guidelines for taking in the waters and mud bath safely, ranging from choosing non-chlorinated natural springs to keeping your head above water. There are a few unwelcome critters that might try to get in through open sores or even your nostrils that you want to be aware of. For additional information, visit DrWeil.com.

So, even though it is not yet widely known in the mainstream, rolling around in the mud bath and getting giddy in a hot mineral spring could be an important part of your health regimen. Perhaps regular visits to the hot springs are just what the doctor ordered for body, mind and soul.

Fortunately, the Safford/Thatcher area is rich in natural hot springs, including The Essence of Tranquility and Kachina Hot Springs. If you want a more posh experience (at a 4-star price), then consider a visit to Two Bunch Palms in Desert Hot Springs, California.
