Thatcher hosts No. 23 Arete Prep on Thursday for 3A play-in game

THATCHER – Thatcher hosts No. 23 Gilbert Arete Prep as No. 10 for a 3A state soccer play-in match on Thursday, Feb. 2. The match will be played in John Mikelson Field on the Eastern Arizona College campus at 6 p.m.

The Eagles (10-1 seeding, 6.6939 rating) finished the regular season as the Southeast Region champion while Arete Prep (6-4-1, 1.2468) was fourth in the Metro Region.

Arete Prep Chargers

The 9-7-2 Chargers have wins of 7-0 over Gilbert San Tan Charter (Nov. 28), 2-1 over Gilbert Benjamin Franklin (Dec. 2), 2-1 over Parker (Dec. 3), 2-1 over Tonopah Valley (Dec. 29), 2-1 in two overtimes over Chandler Prep (Jan. 3), 2-0 over Phoenix Horizon Honors (Jan. 17), 8-0 over Mesa Lincoln Prep (Jan. 19), 3-0 over Scottsdale Cicero Prep (Jan. 23), and 4-1 over Phoenix Highland Prep (Jan. 27),

The losses are 0-3 to Glendale Trivium Prep (Dec. 7), 1-3 to Florence (Dec. 28), 0-3 to Florence (Dec. 29), 2-4 to Chandler Prep (Dec. 30), 0-3 to Gilbert Classical (Jan. 9), 1-8 to Chandler Valley Christian (Jan. 11), 0-6 to Phoenix Basis (Jan. 28).

There were ties of 2-2 with Eloy Santa Cruz (Dec. 2) and 0-0 with Phoenix Veritas Prep (Jan. 31).  

Arete Prep lists seven seniors, seven juniors, five sophomores, and six freshmen on its roster. The team includes seniors Dominic Alvarez, Hunter Lewis, Baraka Nzou, Dhruv Rattan, Peter Waheibi, Liam Whitehead, and Aiden Wonder; juniors Ayaan Ahmed, Aree Chmelnik, Matthew Evans, Jaden Kamau, Ronan Lannuier, Jason Rozas, Derek Ruiz; sophomores Max Bruns, Prahad Rattan, Isaiah Siebers, Kesed Vaughn, and Owen Whitehead; and freshmen Ryan Ahmed, Gustavo Andrade, Dillon Evans, Ben Fornoff, Edwardo Ledesma, and Milan Patel.

The top eight teams host play-in round winners for the state meet first round on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The quarterfinals are at the higher seed on Feb. 11, the semifinals at Phoenix Central High, and the championship at Mesa Westwood on Feb. 18.
