Teen Theatre starting up at EAC

Auditions to be held Monday and Tuesday, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

THATCHER – Eastern Arizona College’s foray into youth theatre will expand with a new age group for those ages 16 – 18 and still in high school.

The newly branded Eastern Arizona College Teen Theatre will have auditions for its inaugural play “A Night of Melodramas” on Monday, Aug. 6, and Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

EAC’s Children’s and Youth Theatre groups are headed up by Penny Whetten, and the inaugural Teen Theatre performance will be directed by her son, Anthony Whetten.

Those wishing to audition must be registered and can do so starting the evening of Saturday, Aug. 4 by clicking here. The program is sponsored by College for Kids and will not affect any college credits a performer may also be taking.

Since the play is not a musical, those who audition will not have to sing a song but should be prepared to do a reading and an improvisation. A melodrama is characterized by having extravagant theatricality with the predominance of a plot and physical action over characterization. Usually, most of the characters are exaggerated and stereotypical. This type of play appeals to the emotions of the event goer. The Gaslight Theatre in Tucson performs melodramas as an example.

Performances for “A Night of Melodramas” will be Oct. 17 – 20.
