GRAHAM COUNTY – A 15-year-old boy was transported to the Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center on June 11 after accidentally shooting himself while playing with loose .22 caliber bullets.

According to a Sheriff’s Office report, a Safford officer was flagged down by the mother of the victim after the shooting. The Safford officer informed County Dispatch of the situation and then proceeded to locate the injured boy and transport him to the hospital for treatment.

While at the hospital, the youth told a deputy that he and his cousin were playing with the bullets during a family party and were hitting them with rocks when one fired and struck his hand. The cousin gave the same account to the deputy.

The injury to the boy’s hand appeared to be minor, and no other injuries were reported.
