ROPER LAKE – With the weather just starting to warm, some may be looking to the area’s water holes to recreate. But if you are heading to Roper Lake State Park, be aware that the swim area is temporarily closed.

According to a notice from Roper Lake State Park, the lake is dependent on a reservoir on Mount Graham that is also utilized by nearby farms and ranches. Due to the long-standing drought, the water levels are too low and carry a health hazard. Additionally, the lake has not been stocked with trout and may not be this season due to high PH levels of the water, according to the park.

“Guests will still be allowed to use their kayaks, small boats, and canoes,” the release states. “The use of floaties and swimming in other areas of the lake will be prohibited at this time. Paddleboards will be allowed as long as you stay on the board and you are not found swimming in the lake.”

“Please remember that this is for your protection.  As mentioned above, with the lack of freshwater coming into the lake, it is not a safe environment for swimming.”

Roper Lake State Park is located just south of Safford off U.S. Highway 191 and Roper Lake Road. Hours of operation are currently 6 a.m. – 9 p.m., with gates closing at 9 and opening in the morning. There is a $10 park entrance fee per vehicle with up to four adults, or $3 per individual/bicycle.
