The Safford Middle School wrestling team came to the San Manuel Invitational and conquered the event, winning 1st-place in the overall team category while capturing the outstanding wrestler award for Kaleb Cordova and 10 individual medals.
Out of the 15 teams competing, Safford and Morenci stood at the top with 239 points and 195 points, respectively. Eloy came in third with 180 points, followed byTortolita in fourth with 160 points.
“It was a great way to start our season,” coach Phillip Ornelas said. “We had a few wrestlers underperform in the finals, but we will work on it and come back even stronger. This is an exciting bunch of wrestlers.”
