SAFFORD – The Lafe Nelson Elementary School and other schools in the Safford school district were briefly placed on a “soft lockdown” Tuesday after authorities were involved in a pursuit of an armed individual in the area.

According to a news release, the Safford Police Department and Graham County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 800 block of 10th Street early Tuesday afternoon. That action led to a foot pursuit with an armed subject. Due to the proximity to the school, the lockdown was placed.
