Staff Reports
SAHUARITA – The Sahuarita School District has canceled classes at all of its schools for Tuesday after receiving online shooting threats to Sahuarita High School, Walden Grove High School, Sahuarita Middle School, and Anza Trail School, which is Kindergarten through eighth grade.
Detectives are investigating the threats that were made “via an unknown direct source through social media,” according to authorities.
The district sent out this notice Monday night.
“Dear SUSD Families: As you may be aware, a recent social media threat was made to three schools in (the) Sahuarita Unified School District. An additional threat to Sahuarita Middle School was posted on social media at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019. Given the number of threats within 24 hours, the nature of the threats, and in an abundance of caution, we have decided to close All SUSD schools, the Early Childhood Center, and L.I.N.K., for tomorrow, Oct. 1, 2019, including all after school activities for grades K-8. High school after school activities will be evaluated on a case by case basis at the schools.
These incidents are quite stressful for schools, staff, students, and parents, but we must take every threat seriously. We will continue to work with (the) Sahuarita Police Department in support of a timely resolution to this matter.
Sahuarita Unified School District and Sahuarita Police Department want to make it clear that those who participate in threatening behavior may be prosecuted. Additionally, students involved in making online threats are subject to school discipline, including suspension and/or expulsion.
Please take a moment to speak with your child(ren) tonight about the seriousness of these incidents. If they see or hear something concerning, they should report it immediately. We encourage anyone that has information about these incidents to make a report to the SPD tip line, 344-7847, 88CRIME, or 911.
We anticipate a normal resumption of school on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. An official update and confirmation will be provided tomorrow. We are grateful for the trust you place with us every day, and we will always strive to honor that trust in our daily actions.”
The Sahuarita football team is scheduled to travel to Safford to play the Bulldogs on Friday night.
