SAFFORD – An abandoned house fire in Safford early Saturday morning is suspected of possibly being arson. There were no reported injuries.

Firefighters were initially dispatched at about 4:18 a.m. to a residence in the 400 block of 2nd Avenue. The area is just northwest of the intersection of U.S. Highway 70 and U.S. Highway 191. Upon arrival, the residence was found fully engulfed.

The volunteer Safford Fire Department rolled three trucks to the incident and contained the blaze to the single structure. Firefighters were on the scene until about 7 a.m., according to Lieutenant Casey Windsor.

“We got it knocked down pretty good,” Windsor said. “Everybody was safe about it.”

Fire Chief Clark Bingham added his support for the crew.

“The guys did a great job,” he said.

The residence is a vacant, abandoned building with no utilities. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
