SAFFORD – Taking a cue from Morenci, the Safford School District announced Thursday that it will begin in-person instruction on a hybrid basis Sept. 2 with an AB schedule. Morenci Schools previously announced they would begin in-person schooling with a hybrid schedule starting Aug. 31.

According to the Safford Unified School District, students with last names that start with the letter A through J will be in Group A with the rest (K through Z) being in Group B. Group A students attend school on Mondays and Wednesdays and Group B will attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with Fridays being alternated. Masks will be mandatory for all students, teachers, staff, and visitors, as they are at the other Gila Valley schools until Governor Doug Ducey’s mandate is lifted. Afterward, masks will then be optional.

For K-8th grade, every Friday will alternate between Group A and Group B. Mt. Graham High School will be on a Group A and Group B schedule but is not assigned by name but rater mentor teachers will contact the students to let them know which group they are with.

Safford High School will have students in Group A allowed to visit with their teachers from 7:40 – 9:30 a.m. on Fridays and Group B from 9:45 – 11:35 a.m.

The school districts in Thatcher, Pima, and Duncan have been going to full, in-person instruction for the past two weeks.
