SAFFORD — The City of Safford is thrilled to announce that the Safford Regional Airport has been awarded a $100,568 grant from United Way to enhance airport safety and emergency response capabilities. This funding supports the acquisition of a specialized Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) truck, essential firefighting equipment, and comprehensive training for airport personnel.

The new ARFF truck, designated as “Crash-1,” was sourced from Martha’s Vineyard Airport in Massachusetts and is now fully operational at the Safford Regional Airport. Specifically designed to handle aircraft-related emergencies, this vehicle is equipped with a 1,500-gallon water tank, 210 gallons of firefighting foam, and 500 pounds of dry chemical extinguishing agent. In addition, it is outfitted with advanced extrication tools and equipment, enabling firefighters to perform rescue operations quickly and effectively during emergencies. The truck is stationed at the airport and operated by trained airport personnel, with mutual aid support available from the Safford Fire Department.

The addition of this state-of-the-art equipment represents a significant investment in airport safety. With increasing airport traffic and the potential for scheduled passenger flights in the near future, the ARFF truck ensures the City of Safford can provide a secure environment for pilots, passengers, and the surrounding community.

On behalf of the City of Safford, I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the generous donors of United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties, whose support made this grant possible. Your commitment to our community is truly appreciated.
