SAFFORD — Quick coordination and decisive action by the Safford Police Department led to a peaceful resolution Wednesday afternoon during a high-stakes welfare check involving an armed individual.

According to police dispatch logs from June 10, emergency services received an urgent call just before 3 p.m. regarding a 32-year-old man who had locked himself inside a bedroom with a firearm. Dispatchers noted that the man was reportedly writing a note and experiencing a severe mental health crisis, though he was not threatening to harm anyone but himself.

Evacuating the Home

Initially categorized as a domestic disturbance, authorities quickly reclassified the call to a welfare check as the details of the crisis became clear.

Responding officers learned that the man’s family, including three children, was still inside the residence but physically separated from him. Recognizing the potential danger, commanding officers immediately ordered the family to evacuate the home. Within minutes of the initial call, the family safely exited the structure without incident.

A Peaceful Surrender

With the family secure, emergency medical services were requested to stand by at a nearby intersection as a precaution while officers on the scene attempted to establish communication.

The strategic de-escalation efforts quickly proved successful. At 3:05 p.m. — just ten minutes after the initial dispatch — the individual exited the home entirely unarmed.

Officers took the man into custody without further incident, securing the scene with no injuries reported to the individual, his family, or responding personnel.
