Safford Police investigating teen shooting

Safford Police are investigating the shooting of a teenage male early Tuesday morning.

SAFFORD – The Safford Police Department is investigating the shooting of a teenage male that occurred Tuesday morning. At the time of the press release the condition of the teen was unknown. Investigators believe the shooting was self-inflicted.

According to the Safford Police Department press release, on Sept. 8 at 6:30 a.m., officers responded to the 1600 block of 8th Avenue in reference to a report of a teenage male with a gunshot wound to the head. Upon arrival, Safford officers along with Lifeline Ambulance began treating the victim and he was transported to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center for further treatment. The male was then airlifted to Banner – University Medical Center Tucson. Initial reports to officers and Safford detectives indicate that this was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, possibly accidental. The matter is still under investigation.

The teen underwent surgery Tuesday and was in the hospital’s intensive care unit afterward.
