SAFFORD – The fifth annual Field of Honor is now on display at Safford City Hall and the Graham County Courthouse in Downtown Safford.
Each flag represents a veteran who served in the U.S. military and has their name, rank, and conflict participation listed on a tag attached to the flagpole.
The event started in 2019 with Chris Gibbs of the Lions Club and then Safford City Manager Horacio Skeete, in honor of our veterans for Veterans Day, which became a national holiday in 1938 and originally commemorated the end of hostilities for World War 1 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918.
This year, flags are also representing Revolutionary War veterans as well. The flags are on display during the week surrounding Veteran’s Day hosted by the Safford Lions Club.
There will be a Veterans Day Parade down Main Street in Safford, lining up at 9:30 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 11, and a Veterans Day ceremony will take place outside of the courthouse immediately afterward starting at about 11 a.m.
So if you have some time, be sure to stop by Downtown Safford this week at 717 W. Main St. and stroll through the field, read the tags on the flags to honor those who served their country, and check out the parade and ceremony on Friday.
