SAFFORD – Safford High School is pleased to announce the hire of Sheri Camarena as the new head boys basketball coach.

Camarena has a long history with the sport of basketball as a player and coach. She was a four-year high school letterman who led her team to a New Mexico state championship. She continued her athletic career at Western New Mexico University, where she played both volleyball and basketball, earning All-American honors in both sports.

At the end of her college career, Camarena held several records in both sports and ultimately received the honor of being inducted into WNMU’s Hall of Fame.

Camarena extended her passion for sport into a coaching career, coaching children at a variety of different levels and sports over the past 15 years.

“We are excited to have coach Camarena on board because of the experience and expertise she will bring to our program,” Safford Athletic Director Toni Corona said. “She is a well-respected leader in our school and community.”

Camarena is currently the high school varsity volleyball and tennis coach.
