EAGER – The Round Valley Roundball Shootout Tournament took place over the weekend and both Safford and Fort Thomas schools participated.
Boys
Safford (1-0 region, 4-5 overall) went 3-2 at the tournament, defeating the 2A San Carlos Braves 64-35, the 1A Leading Edge Academy – Gilbert Spartans, 70-59, and the 2A Valley (Sanders) Pirate 55-45. Safford lost to the host team 3A Round Valley Elks 51-54, and twice to the 1A Mogollon Mustangs, 42-64 on Friday and 41-56 on Saturday.
Fort Thomas (1-1 conference, 1-7 overall) fell to the 3A Show Low Cougars 25-76, the 3A Alchesay Falcons 46-54, the 3A Blue Ridge Yellowjackets 21-51, and the 3A Round Valley Elks 37-50.
Girls
Safford (1-1 conference, 4-3 overall) went 3-2 at the tournament, defeating the 3A Blue Ridge Yellowjackets 47-34, the 1A Mogollon Mustangs 35-28, and the 1A Cibecue Wildcats 40-31. Safford lost to the 3A Holbrook Roadrunners 22-54, and the 2A St. Johns Redskins 17-50.
Fort Thomas (2-0 conference, 9-1 overall) went 6-1 at the tournament and finished in third place by defeating the 1A Valley (Sanders) Pirate 53-41, the 2A St. Johns Redskins 61-54, the 3A Alchesay Falcons 49-43 on Friday and 61-48 on Saturday, and the 4A Bradshaw Mountain Bears, 61-40 in the consolation game. The Apaches fell to the 3A Holbrook Roadrunners 41-46 in the semifinals Saturday morning.
Jasmine Olivar won the tournament’s 3-point contest and was selected to the all-tournament team.
