MORENCI – Tucson Sabino steps onto the Lawson Stadium field for the first time on Friday, Oct. 20. It is for a 3A South Region contest, but not the first time facing the Morenci Wildcats. The Sabercats fell 33-0 “on the Hill” during the initial pairing (Oct. 5, 1973).

The other region contest has No. 6 Thatcher (5-3, 9.6828) at No. 8 Pusch Ridge (6-2, 10.7178).

There are no non-region pairings as No. 15 Safford (4-5, 5.0196) is idle.

During the previous 20 seasons (2003-22), Sabino has been a state finalist four times, thrice in 4A (2005, ’06, ’09 and once in 3A (2016) while Morenci has accomplished that thrice in 2A (2012, ’21, ’22). Neither team has won a state title in the 21st Century.

The Sabercats have posted combined 158-32 (.832) regular season and 21-19 (.525) post-season records compared to 115-75 (.638) and 13-14 (.481), respectively, by the Wildcats.

Sabino has had two head coaches in the two decades, Jay Campos (133-35 overall, 15-14 post-season, 2003-16) and Ryan McBrayer (46-16, 6-5, 2017-22) compared to six by Morenci, David Brockmeier (15-15, 0-1 2003-05), Dale Hooper (9-20, 0-1, 2006-08), Frank Ogas (37-18, 4-4, 2009-13), Gary Sandoval (16-15, 0-2, 2014-16), David Gallegos (17-7, 2-2, 2017-18), and Joseph Garcia (34-14, 7-4, 2019-22).

Morenci has a winning percentage of 82 (23-5, 12-2 in 2022, 11-3 in 2021) versus 70 (16-7, 8-4 in 2022, 8-3 in 2021) for the visitors.

Sabino enters the contest ranked No. 4 (6-2 seeding, 13.7724 rating) while Morenci is No. 11 (5-3, 9.1151).

There are two common 2023 opponents played, Safford and Blue Ridge. The Sabercats have wins over both, by 29 (50-21) over Safford (Sept. 15) and by 13 over Blue Ridge (Sept. 22) while the Wildcats split, falling by 12 (14-26) to Safford (Sept. 29) and topping Blue Ridge (Oct. 6) by seven (14-7).

Sabino has averaged a 45-24 (90-48) score per game over them or a 21-point margin compared to 18-16 (35-31) or a 2-point margin by the Wildcats.

However, the 2023 contest will not be against each other’s history. It will be their experience and preparation that matters along with some breaks.
