Pima’s Martinez and Haws take 2A Black Region Player-of-the-Year and Defensive Player-of-the-Year

PIMA – The No. 3 Pima Roughriders (10-0 conference, 11-1 overall) are preparing to take on the unbeaten No. 2-ranked Tonopah Valley The Phoenix (11-0 conference, 12-0 overall) in the 2A State Football Semifinal at Westwood School in Mesa on Saturday, starting at 2 p.m., and they will have the top player and defensive player in the region at their service.

Region awards were announced for the 2A Black recently, and Pima’s Jeremiah Martinez was named the 2A Black Region Player-of-the-Year, and Brock Haws was named Defensive Player-of-the-Year.

Miami head coach Brandon Powell was named Region Coach-of-the-Year, and Miami’s Abram Castaneda was named Region Offensive Player-of-the-Year.

2A Black Region Player-of-the-Year – Jeremiah Martinez

Jeremiah is Pima’s workhorse running back and has been a beast this year, leading the entire 2A Conference with 1,840 yards rushing, according to stats from MaxPreps. In 12 games listed, Martinez averages 8.52 yards per carry and 153 yards per game and also leads the conference in scoring with 24 touchdowns.

Defensive Player-of-the-Year – Brock Haws

Brock Haws is a relentless defensive lineman who strikes fear in the hearts of offensive linemen lined up against him. For the season, Haws has recorded 12 sacks and 88 total tackles (29 solo), including 25 tackles for loss and one interception.
